IC 405 - Flaming Star Nebula

IC 405 - Flaming Star Nebula

This is IC 405 also known as the Flaming Star Nebula. This is an emission (formed of ionized gases that emit light of various wavelengths) and reflection nebula (clouds of interstellar dust which reflect the light of a nearby star or stars) in the constellation Auriga north of the celestial equator, surrounding the bluish star AE Aurigae (bit of a turquoise hue in the photo).
This nebula is about 1500 light years away – so the light you are looking at left the nebula some 600 years after the birth of Christ. It is about 5 light years in diameter and is not visible to the naked eye.
This image is a compilation of 30 x 300 second exposures so about 2.5 hours and was taken the end of November.
