NGC 6960, Witch's Broom, Western Veil
This has been a target that I have gone after multiple times - all with terrible results. This is known as the Witch's Broom or Western Veil (and several other designations I won't bore you with). It is a collection of heated and ionized gas that is in the constellation Cygnus - almost straight up this time of year.
This nebula was created when a star exploded that was about 20x bigger that our sun. That happened about 10-20,000 years ago - so just before digital cameras.... J It is about 2,400 light years from the earth, and when it exploded you would have been able to see the light from it during the day (ok, prove me wrong... ). It was discovered in 1784 and is about twice as wide as the full moon – but almost impossible to see with the naked eye.
This is 9 x 420 second exposures that I took September 1.
